The Objective of the Assignment
The Livestock and Agro-Business Specialist will be responsible for driving sustainable livestock management and agro-business development among herder communities. The role focuses on improving livestock health, productivity, market access, and ensuring the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices, while integrating agriculture value chain development.
Detailed Tasks and/or Expected Output
Specific tasks include, but may not be limited to:
- Strengthen local veterinary services by establishing volunteer animal health worker systems and modernizing veterinary labs with advanced tools for disease diagnostics and treatment.
- Organize and conduct training for veterinarians, health workers, and herders on disease prevention, diagnosis, sustainable livestock management practices, and value chain development.
- Provide technical support to herders, cooperatives, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on business planning, value-added processes, improving livestock productivity, product quality, and meeting market standards.
- Facilitate connections between herder cooperatives, SMEs, and markets, helping them negotiate contracts, secure market access, and meet buyer requirements in quality and volume.
- Strengthen the financial literacy of SMEs, linking them to financial institutions, supporting them with business proposal preparation, and accessing financing opportunities.
- Support the development of agro-business value chains by identifying key opportunities for processing, packaging, and marketing of livestock and agricultural products.
- Establish monitoring and evaluation systems to assess the performance of veterinary services, SMEs, value chains, and rangeland management interventions.
- Conduct detailed value chain analyses to identify bottlenecks, opportunities for improvement, and strategies for enhancing the competitiveness of livestock and agricultural products.
- Collect and analyze data on livestock health, rangeland conditions, market trends, and agro-business value chains to inform decision-making, project adjustments, and reporting.
- Collaborate with the Rangeland Specialist, Herders Organizations and Certifications Specialist, and Agronomist to align efforts across livestock, rangeland, and agricultural initiatives, ensuring synergy and avoiding duplication of tasks.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
The Livestock and Agro-Business Specialist shall have (i) A minimum of Master's degree in agriculture, veterinary science, or a related field; (ii) have at least 8 years of proven experience in agro-business and veterinary services, (iii) problem-solving skills and adaptability to work in challenging rural environments; and (iv) be highly committed to working in project sites to ensure effective implementation of rangeland management initiatives; (v) excellent English and Mongolian oral and written skills; and (vi) good team player and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
