The Objective of the Assignment
The Agronomist is responsible for the design, planning, and implementation of hay and forage planting systems, as well as the establishment and maintenance of irrigation systems to support forage production. The Agronomist will work closely with local farmers, project teams, and technical experts to ensure successful forage crop yields and sustainable land and water management practices.
Detailed Tasks and/or Expected Output
Specific tasks include, but may not be limited to:
- Develop detailed plans for hay and forage planting, including climate-resilient crop selection, seed sourcing, and planting schedules based on local conditions.
- Conduct soil analysis and recommend suitable soil management practices to enhance forage growth and long-term sustainability.
- Supervise and coordinate all forage planting activities, ensuring best practices in land preparation, seeding, fertilization, and pest/weed management.
- Implement crop rotation techniques to improve soil fertility and overall productivity.
- Monitor forage crop growth through regular field visits, identifying risks and recommending appropriate interventions.
- Provide technical guidance and training to farmers and staff on forage production, crop management, organic fertilizers and biopesticides, and sustainable practices to enhance climate resilience.
- Design and implement efficient irrigation systems tailored to forage production needs, collaborating with engineers for installation.
- Oversee irrigation system maintenance, ensuring water-use efficiency and sustainability.
- Train farmers on the operation and upkeep of irrigation systems, emphasizing water conservation techniques.
- Monitor water usage efficiency, assess system performance, and recommend improvements for sustainable water management.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
The Agronomist shall have (i) A minimum of bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Agronomy, Agricultural Science, Irrigation Engineering, or a related field; (ii) At least 3 years of working experience in agricultural projects, especially in the context of sustainable farming, soil management, and water conservation; (iii) in-depth knowledge of forage crops, agronomic practices, and modern irrigation systems (drip, sprinkler, surface); (iv) excellent communication and capacity-building abilities to engage with farmers and project stakeholders; (v) ability to work in rural settings and travel frequently for field visits; (vi) excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
