PIU RANGELAND SPECIALIST

Contract: Full-time for 1 year with possible extension based on performance.

Location: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

The Objective of the Assignment

The objective of the Rangeland Specialist is to work closely with nomadic herder communities and relevant stakeholders to implement sustainable rangeland management practices, improve herders’ livelihoods, and foster community resilience in the face of climate change and environmental challenges. Additionally, the Specialist will establish and oversee rangeland monitoring and facilitation systems to ensure continuous improvement and adaptive management.

Detailed Tasks and/or Expected Output

Specific tasks include, but may not be limited to:

  1. Foster relationships with nomadic herder communities to understand their needs, challenges, and traditional practices in rangeland management.
  2. Organize and facilitate community meetings, workshops, and training sessions to encourage participation and knowledge sharing.
  3. Develop and implement sustainable rangeland management strategies that enhance productivity while preserving ecological balance.
  4. Conduct assessments of rangeland conditions, identifying degradation issues and recommending appropriate interventions.
  5. Establish and manage rangeland monitoring systems to assess rangeland health, productivity, and the impact of management practices, ensuring data-driven decision-making.
  6. Facilitate the development of locally appropriate action plans for rangeland restoration and sustainable use.
  7. Provide training on sustainable grazing practices, pasture management, and conservation techniques to improve rangeland health and livestock productivity.
  8. Support herder communities in developing their capacity for effective resource management and decision-making.
  9. Coordinate with stakeholders, including local government agencies and NGOs, to align efforts and enhance project implementation.
  10. Advocate for policies that support sustainable rangeland management and the rights of nomadic herders at local and national levels.
  11. Prepare regular reports on project activities and document lessons learned to contribute to the project's knowledge base.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

The Rangeland Specialist shall have (i) A minimum of Masters’ degree or higher in pastureland or rangeland management, agricultural science, environmental science, or a related field; (ii) at least 8 years of experience in rangeland management, and policy development, and practices; (iii) strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with nomadic herder communities; and (iv) problem-solving skills and adaptability to work in challenging rural environments; and (v) be highly committed to working in project sites to ensure effective implementation of rangeland management initiatives; and (vi) excellent English and Mongolian oral and written skills.
